A+ (220-1201 + 220-1202) is the entry-level IT cert. It covers hardware, mobile devices, networking basics, operating systems, security fundamentals, and troubleshooting. Two exams. Best if you are starting in IT or switching careers. Net+ (N10-009) is the networking cert. Single exam covering networking fundamentals, implementations, operations, security, and troubleshooting. Best if you already work in IT and want to deepen networking. Sec+ (SY0-701) is the cybersecurity cert. Single exam covering security concepts, threats, architecture, operations, and program management. Best if you are pivoting into cybersecurity.

Which cert should I start with?

If you have no IT background, start with A+. It builds the vocabulary every other cert assumes. If you already work in IT and want to specialize, Net+ or Sec+ both stand alone. CompTIA recommends A+ then Net+ then Sec+ as the trinity path, but Net+ and Sec+ are not blocked by A+. Pick the one that matches the job you want, not the order a vendor recommends.

How do I pick a cert track on first sign-in?

How do I set a daily goal?

Settings > Daily goal. Pick a target: 15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes per day. The dashboard shows a streak counter against that goal. Missing a day breaks the streak. There is no punishment for breaking a streak, but the visual nudge helps most learners stay consistent.

Pick these when you're working with the material. Exam practice (row 3): Practice Exam, a full 90-question exam-format run. Below the rows, the Domain Grid lets you jump straight to any specific objective from any track. Active track is whatever you've selected at the top of the page; switch tracks to see different content.

On the sign-in page, click Continue with Google or Continue with Microsoft. Authorize the standard read-only profile scope. We never see your password and we never get access to your email or files. You can disconnect from your Google or Microsoft account settings at any time.

How do I upgrade?

Click Upgrade from any paywall or from /pricing. Stripe checkout opens, you enter payment details, and access is applied after the signed Stripe webhook is processed. Available payment methods are the ones Stripe presents for that checkout and device; there is no guaranteed activation time.

How do I cancel?

Open the avatar menu, choose Settings, then select "Manage or switch subscription" under Subscription. That opens the Stripe customer portal, where you can change plans, change billing periods, or cancel without a retention flow, exit interview, or "are you sure" maze. Your paid features stay active until the end of the current billing period, then the account drops to the Free tier automatically. Canceling does not delete your account or server-backed history. Flashcard ratings and an in-progress deck stay only in the browser where you studied, do not sync between devices, and are removed if that browser's site data is cleared. Lifetime is a one-time purchase with no subscription to cancel.

Do you offer refunds?

Generally, no. The Free tier is the evaluation period. It is always available and includes unlimited Study and Flashcards, one full free Adventure lesson per cert track, 5 Sim tickets per day, and one Practice Exam attempt per cert track. Test every surface before paying. Once a paid billing period starts on Pro, Academy, or Lifetime, that period is non-refundable. Teacher annual licenses and seat packs have their own 30-day refund window in the terms.

What if I was charged by mistake?

Because they are. Adventure is designed for productive struggle, the moment where you are not sure and have to commit. That is when learning actually happens. If every choice felt obvious, the platform would not be doing its job.

How do Flashcard ratings work?

After you reveal a card, Again sends it to the end of the current deck. Hard usually brings it back 3 to 5 cards later, or sooner when you are near the deck end. Good and Easy both move it to the Got pile. You can flag any card for /study/flagged, and the deck filters let you reopen Flagged, Review, Got, quiz-focused, or objective-focused cards. An in-progress deck resumes after a reload in this browser. Card ratings and sessions do not sync to another device.

What's the difference between Flashcards and Quizzes?

Flashcards drill recall (Port 443 is for what?). Quizzes test application in exam-style multiple-choice format (A user reports websites by IP but not name, which service is down?). Again places a card in Review, Hard keeps it in the current deck, and Good or Easy places it in Got. Those ratings are not graded and do not change your Mastery Index. Correctness on quiz and Practice Exam items does. Use both for their different jobs.

Why do answer options change between attempts?

Accepted Answer

The answer choices shuffle on every attempt of every multiple-choice question. This is intentional. It forces you to learn the content rather than memorize positional patterns ('the right answer was B last time'). Question order is also shuffled per attempt, so your retakes always feel fresh. A small number of questions (3 out of more than 1,350) opt out of shuffling because their stems or option text literally reference letters. We're rewriting those to use content references instead, after which 100% of questions will participate.

CompTIA uses performance-based questions to test problem solving in realistic settings, but it does not publish a fixed five-format taxonomy. RTJ provides five authored practice patterns: drag-target matching, image hotspot, ordered list, validated text input, and log-entry triage.

Net+ Sim tickets that require execution-style troubleshooting are now real interactive consoles instead of multiple-choice. All 13 of 13 Net+ execution tickets are hands-on as of 2026-06-28. You actually use the consoles to do the work: change a VLAN, inspect packet captures, configure SSH, roll back a VPN regex. The 5 Net+ judgment tickets remain multiple-choice by design. A+ and Sec+ Sim tickets stay multiple-choice because their lessons are decisions, not actions.

Hands-on tickets bank to three outcomes: Completed if you performed every canonical checkpoint, Partial if you hit some but not all, and Abandoned (0 XP) if you click Resolve without performing the canonical actions. A clean Completed run earns full XP; off-path actions cost deductions. The debrief shows your actions chronologically alongside the canonical sequence so you see exactly where the gap was. Multiple-choice tickets are graded via reply-based scoring on a four-step scale: Root Cause Fix (100 XP), Resolved With Detours (75 XP), Workaround (40 XP), and Mishandled (0 XP).

What's the conversation thread for during a hands-on ticket?

It shows the customer's opening message plus a live log of every action you take in the consoles (port.inspect, vlan.assign, policy.rollback, etc). You can scroll back through what you did. The conversation thread is where the action history lives, not a separate panel.

Does my work persist if I close a ticket and come back?

Yes. Every tool (hands-on console or reference tool) restores per-ticket state on revisit. Switch Console tab, selected port, staged VLAN change, terminal log on Network Probe, revealed cards on Cable Tester, Email folder + read/flagged messages, Knowledge Base article, Past Tickets filter, Remote Desktop open app. All persisted per ticket. Open the same tool on a different ticket and you see fresh state, not stale state from a prior ticket.

Why doesn't Sim Mode work well on mobile?

The hands-on consoles need screen real estate to display tables, packet captures, terminal output, and multi-tab navigation. Sim is intended for desktop and tablet. On phone you'll see a device-recommendation card and can continue with a reduced experience or move to Q-bank. Q-bank, Flashcards, PBQ, Adventure, and Study are available on mobile, but this is not a claim that every interaction has completed device and assistive-technology verification.

How does the ticket allowance work on Free?

Free gives you 5 tickets per day, refreshed at midnight your local time. The 5 tickets per day include both multiple-choice and hands-on (any mix). Pro unlocks the full unlimited queue plus access to harder ticket archetypes (bad-faith callers, escalation chains, after-hours incidents).

Can I retake a hands-on ticket?

Yes. Resolved tickets reset their state when pulled from the queue again. Your prior debrief is preserved in lifetime stats but the working state of the consoles starts fresh. This lets you study a ticket multiple times. Maybe you got it wrong the first attempt, learned from the debrief, and want to nail it.

What if I get stuck on a hands-on ticket?

Every Sim ticket has a 'Need a nudge?' button. Click it and Roli (your Sim helper character) gives you a Socratic nudge, a question or hint that points you toward what to investigate next without giving you the answer. This is free during the current release. If truly stuck, you can resolve the ticket as-is (banks as Abandoned or Partial depending on your progress) and review the debrief to see the canonical sequence.

What is the Practice Exam?

The full Pro practice exam is 90 questions in 90 minutes, with 5 RTJ performance tasks and 85 multiple-choice questions. CompTIA publishes a maximum of 90 questions and a mix of multiple-choice and performance-based questions, but not a fixed PBQ count or interaction taxonomy. The timer counts down with no pauses.

How does the free Practice Exam attempt work?

Every free account gets one free Practice Exam attempt per track. A+ free attempt: 25 multiple-choice + 3 PBQs in 30 minutes. Net+ and Sec+ free attempts: 20 multiple-choice + 3 PBQs in 30 minutes. You see the Pearson VUE-style interface, the PBQ interaction formats, and an attempt score at the end. Your answers add item-level evidence to your Mastery Index, while the attempt score stays separate. The free attempt is the taste; Pro is the full 90-question version with expanded PBQ practice and unlimited retakes.

How many free Practice Exam attempts do I get?

You get one free Practice Exam attempt per CompTIA exam, for life. If you're studying for A+, that means two free attempts: one for Core 1 (220-1201) and one for Core 2 (220-1202). They're tracked separately because they're two different CompTIA exams. The same applies if you add Network+ (N10-009) or Security+ (SY0-701): one free attempt per exam. Once you've used your free attempt for an exam, that exam's tile on the Practice Exam picker shows 'Unlock with Pro.' The other exams' tiles still show your free attempt status until you use them. Pro members get unlimited Practice Exam attempts across every exam. Cancel anytime.

Your Mastery Index uses demonstrated correctness from quiz and exam items, weighted by the official CompTIA domain weights. The evidence-quality label shows how broadly you have practiced across distinct items and objectives, plus whether the required full Practice Exams are represented. It does not raise or lower the index. Full-length Practice Exam results are reported separately and do not blend into the index. Flashcard ratings, Adventure completion, Study Guide use, and Sim tickets do not change it. This is an internal RTJ study signal, not a pass prediction.

How does the Practice Exam compare to the real Pearson VUE exam?

Format matches. 90 questions in 90 minutes, mixed multiple-choice + PBQs, same interaction formats, same per-domain weighting CompTIA publishes for each cert. Questions are written to V15 objectives for A+ and current objectives for Net+ (N10-009) and Sec+ (SY0-701). Content is original, not from CompTIA's exam bank. We do not have access to live exam questions and you should not trust anyone who claims to.

When should I book the real exam?

RTJ does not determine when you should schedule. Review the Mastery Index with its evidence-quality label, recent full-length Practice Exam results, domain gaps, pacing, PBQ practice, and your personal timing. The index is an internal RTJ study signal, not a pass prediction, and it does not tell you whether or when to book the certification exam.

What happens if I run out of time?

Same as the real exam: unanswered questions count as wrong. The score shows you exactly which questions you skipped. Use that data to drill speed on weak domains before the next attempt.

Can I retake the free attempt?

No. The free attempt is one per track, lifetime. Once you complete it, that track's Practice Exam needs Pro (or Academy, Teacher, or Lifetime) for further attempts. Free attempts on other tracks you have not used yet are still available.

The Net+ Sim experience is now fully hands-on: all 13 execution-style Sim tickets are real interactive consoles (Switch, Network Probe, Firewall, Routing, Cable Tester, VPN, SSH, Wireless Controller) rather than multiple-choice. The 5 judgment-style Net+ tickets remain multiple-choice by design.

How fresh is the Sec+ content?

The Security+ learner track is organized around SY0-701 and spans its five domains. Major learner surfaces are live, but curriculum downloads and non-video objective depth are still being audited and completed. A surface or inventory count is not a claim that every objective has complete, verified coverage.

Do you need to take A+ before Net+ or Sec+?

No. CompTIA recommends A+ as a foundation but Net+ and Sec+ stand alone as exams. If you already work in IT, you can skip A+. If you have no IT background, A+ first will make Net+ and Sec+ easier.
