Assign a static IPv4 address and verify the gateway

On a canned Windows workstation, assign the approved static IPv4 address, subnet mask, and default gateway from the command line. Read the configuration back, then ping the gateway. A successful gateway ping proves one-hop reachability on the local subnet only. It does not prove DNS resolution, internet access, or reachability beyond the gateway. Do not claim this canned workstation is a real machine. This page teaches a job procedure. These are not exam questions, this is not a score predictor, and nothing here is taken from any certification exam.

Steps

  1. 1

Run netsh interface ip set address "Ethernet" static 192.0.2.10 255.255.255.0 192.0.2.1. A successful set returns to the prompt with no message.

  2. 2

Run ipconfig. Confirm the Ethernet adapter shows IPv4 address 192.0.2.10, subnet mask 255.255.255.0, and default gateway 192.0.2.1.

  3. 3

Run ping 192.0.2.1. Confirm four replies and zero packet loss, then record only that the default gateway is reachable from this host.

What you should see

The Ethernet adapter shows 192.0.2.10 / 255.255.255.0 / 192.0.2.1. The gateway returns four replies with zero loss. This proves one-hop reachability to the default gateway only, not DNS or internet access.
