Back up a user's files with robocopy before a repair

Before replacing a workstation disk, preview the backup job, copy the user's Documents folder and all subfolders with robocopy, then confirm the expected files are on the backup drive. This page teaches a job procedure. These are not exam questions, this is not a score predictor, and nothing here is taken from any certification exam.

The steps on this page are free to read. The hands-on lab for this procedure is included with Academy.

Steps

  1. 1

Run robocopy C:\Users\jsmith\Documents D:\Backups\jsmith /E /L to list every file and subfolder without copying anything.

  2. 2

Run robocopy C:\Users\jsmith\Documents D:\Backups\jsmith /E /COPY:DAT /R:1 /W:1 to copy the files while preserving their data, attributes, and timestamps.

  3. 3

Run dir D:\Backups\jsmith and confirm the copied files are present before replacing the disk.

What you should see

The /L run lists two would-copy files without writing them, the real run reports two copied files with no failures and an ending timestamp, and the destination listing shows Budget.xlsx and Resume.docx under D:\Backups\jsmith.
