Check a failing drive's health and repair the volume

Decide whether a slow, SMART-flagged drive should be repaired or replaced by reading its reliability counters, then scan and repair the filesystem with chkdsk. This page teaches a job procedure. These are not exam questions, this is not a score predictor, and nothing here is taken from any certification exam.

Steps

  1. 1

Run Get-PhysicalDisk | Get-StorageReliabilityCounter | Format-List and read Temperature, Wear, and the uncorrected read and write error counts.

  2. 2

Run chkdsk C: /scan to check the NTFS volume online; it reports whether problems were found.

  3. 3

Run chkdsk C: /f to repair the errors; on the system drive it schedules the fix for the next restart because the volume cannot be locked while in use.

What you should see

The reliability counters show uncorrected read and write errors and a Wear value of 14 without adding a diagnosis. The online scan reports problems that need an offline fix, and chkdsk /f schedules the repair for the next restart.
