Enable OpenSSH Server and connect for remote access

Enable secure command-line remote access by installing the Windows OpenSSH Server feature, starting sshd and setting it to start automatically, then connecting with ssh user@host to confirm the service works. This page teaches a job procedure. These are not exam questions, this is not a score predictor, and nothing here is taken from any certification exam.

The steps on this page are free to read. The hands-on lab for this procedure is included with Academy.

Steps

  1. 1

Run Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name OpenSSH.Server~~~~0.0.1.0 and confirm the capability reports Online as True.

  2. 2

Run Start-Service sshd, then Set-Service -Name sshd -StartupType 'Automatic' so the service runs now and after a reboot.

  3. 3

Run ssh helpdesk@WKSTN-01, accept the host authenticity prompt, enter the helpdesk password, and confirm a remote prompt opens.

What you should see

The OpenSSH Server capability reports Online as True with no restart needed, the sshd service accepts the startup commands, and the SSH connection displays the host authenticity check followed by a remote prompt.
