Extend a volume blocked by a recovery partition (Disk Management)
On the canned DEV-BUILD-02 Windows 11 practice box, open C:'s context menu and confirm that Extend Volume is disabled because the 956 MB Recovery partition 4 sits between C: and the unallocated space. Right-click that Recovery partition and confirm Disk Management also greys out Delete Volume, then in the in-frame elevated Command Prompt turn Windows RE off (reagentc /disable), remove the partition with DiskPart (select disk 1, select partition 4, delete partition override), turn Windows RE back on (reagentc /enable), and extend C: into the now-adjacent space. This canned scene models the outcome; the disk and partition numbers are samples and the simulation does not inspect or change the learner's machine.
Steps
- 1
Open C:'s context menu and confirm that Extend Volume is greyed out because the 956 MB Recovery partition separates C: from the unallocated space.
- 2
Right-click the Recovery partition and confirm Delete Volume is greyed out, then open the in-frame elevated Command Prompt and, in order: reagentc /disable (Windows RE points at this partition), DiskPart (select disk 1, select partition 4, delete partition override), then reagentc /enable.
- 3
Open C:'s context menu again, choose Extend Volume, and complete the wizard using the adjacent available space.
What you should see
Extend Volume is disabled before partition 4 is removed, becomes available after the space is adjacent, and C: shows the larger size after the wizard completes.
