Initialize, partition, and format a new disk with diskpart
From a canned elevated diskpart session, provision a new blank disk: run list disk to find the new Offline disk (Free equal to Size), select disk 1, confirm it with detail disk (no volumes) before any destructive command, then online disk, convert gpt, create partition primary, format fs=ntfs quick label=DATA, and assign letter=E. Selecting a disk is harmless; format is the command that destroys data, so you identify the disk number TWICE before formatting. Do not claim this canned disk or session is real. This page teaches a job procedure. These are not exam questions, this is not a score predictor, and nothing here is taken from any certification exam.
Steps
- 1
Run list disk. Identify the new disk (Disk 1): Offline, with Free equal to Size.
- 2
Run select disk 1 to set the focus to the new disk.
- 3
Run detail disk to confirm the selected disk is the right, empty one (no volumes) before anything destructive.
- 4
Run online disk to bring the Offline disk online.
- 5
Run convert gpt to set the GPT partition style on the empty disk.
- 6
Run create partition primary to allocate the space.
- 7
Run format fs=ntfs quick label=DATA to create the NTFS file system (this destroys any data in the volume).
- 8
Run assign letter=E to make the volume usable.
What you should see
Disk 1 goes from Offline/empty to Online, GPT, with one NTFS partition labeled DATA on E:. You confirmed the disk number with list disk and detail disk before formatting.
