Re-terminate a failed cable
When a cable test shows an open at the near-end termination, you re-terminate that end: cut the bad plug, strip the jacket, order the eight conductors to the site standard (T568B here), seat them, crimp, and retest. The retest passes only when the order is correct, so a wrong order means cut and redo. This lab uses the simulated tester; a real crimp and wire-map tester work the same way.
Steps
- 1
Confirm Layer 1 first. Both link lights are dark and the adapter reads Media disconnected, so the fault is physical. Check this before you cut anything.
- 2
Run the cable test on the jack. The wire map shows pair 3-6 open at the near end, so the field-terminated plug is the fault.

- 3
Cut the bad plug and strip the jacket to expose the eight conductors.
- 4
Order the eight conductors to T568B: white-orange, orange, white-green, blue, white-blue, green, white-brown, brown.
- 5
Seat the ordered conductors fully into the plug and crimp.
- 6
Retest. A clean wire map with all eight conductors continuous confirms the fix; a wrong order fails, so reorder and crimp again.
What you should see
After re-terminating to T568B and crimping, the retest reads a clean wire map and the cable passes.
